I'm not sure if this is a misplaced modifier or not, but I heard a hilarious syntax error on a medicine commercial today. The announcer was warning about side effects, and he said, "Patients taking aspirin or the elderly need to consult their doctor..." It sounded like he was talking about patients who take aspirin and patients who take the elderly...! :)

Beg to differ about "I only ate vegetables."

That could mean that (1) I was the only person in the group that ate the vegetables, [which usage would prefer commas around "only"] (2) I ate them, but didn't cook or wash or grow them, or (3) vegetables were the only thing I ate [which would be better served by moving "only" to the other side of "ate"].

Any of those meanings are plausible from the syntax, so context would have to provide the key to decoding the sentence.
