I cringe when I hear, "Hopefully, the sun will shine on our picnic", "Hopefully, it will be sunny tomorrow" or similar expressions. The sun cannot be "hopeful" not can "it". I've always used the correct example, "Hopefully, the rescue people searched for the missing child".
A tip to all: Look at the subject of your sentence; if it is capable of being full of hope (i.e., a human or other living being - can cats hope that they'll get what they like for dinner?), then it's okay to use "hopefully".

My personal opinion is that using 'Hopefully' instead of 'I hope' sounds more passive and less formal.

Personally, I think it's perfectly acceptable, depending on context.

Forming distinct representations of contexts, places and possibly events is a crucial function of the hippocampus.

In Spanish there is a great word: "ojalá"

Ojalá is an interesting word. It's usually translated "I hope" or "I wish" and is followed by a verb in the subjunctive. It doesn't need to be conjugated. It comes from the Arabic ua xa Alah or inshallah — it literally means "Oh, Allah."

I guess "hopefully" has become the "ojalà" of English.
