Thank you so, so much for schooling everyone in the proper use of "hi" as a salutation. It is a tremendous pet peeve of mine to see so many people using this incorrectly. Well done!

Thankyou! Thankyou! Thankyou!

I have always used "Hi, Squiggly!" or "Hi, Squiggly~" as my salutation, but seldom receive one that includes the comma. I had decided that perhaps the rules had changed or perhaps I hadn't learned them correctly in the beginning! I will sleep well tonight.

Okay, I just don't get the fuss about "Hi John" at the beginning of an email. I remember the first time my editor wrote "Hi Jeff" on an email. I asked her why we wouldn't put the comma, and she just pointed out that it wasn't really standard practice for an email.I respected her well-educated opinion. I don't put the hyphen in e-mail either. Shoot me! I stopped worrying about it for an email. And if I think I am going to send it to somebody a bit too frumpy or uptight, I just use "Dear Chris". For those of you who are worried about it, I do put a comma after my closing;-)

About salutation greetings. Do you only capitalize the first letter. For example,
Good Morning Ms. Kate or Good morning Ms. Kate. Which of the two is the correct way in an opening salutation.
Thanks!

Thanks for confirming the correct punctuation for commas in email salutations. Seems some people have to have it officially from the Grammar Girl or some other "official" source to believe it! (John, I'm referring to you.)

When it comes to the "Hi Squiggly," vs. "Hi, Squiggly." options, I take the middle ground and use "Hi, Squiggly,"--It correctly sets off the interjection, and doesn't make it look condescending if you use it somewhere where someone has already used the "Hi Squiggly," format.
