Today's topic is how to use the word myself..

I could use some help with the initial sentence: Please contact Squiggly, Aardvark or myself.... OK...It is stated that myself is objective never subjective. In this case the subject is the implied (you) for this imperative sentence. So that makes myself objective. What exactly makes it wrong then to say myself instead of "me?"..perhaps I am an impatient reader but the only reasons I saw stated were to use the trick of withdrawing the other subjects and taht that would make it sound better. Is that the only reason? What do the grammar rules say?

"I myself" may be grammatically correct, but it remains a tautology and a serious error of style. Accordingly, usage of the phrase is best avoided.

OK--here's one that initially irked me when I read it in an email, but perhaps it is correct: "I made an appointment with John, Carla and myself."
If you take out "John and Carla," you could say "I made an appointment with myself" because it is actually reflexive. But you would not say "He made an apointment with myself." (Granted, an appointment with yourself might be a rather lonely affair...)

Thank you for your comments regarding the use of reflexive pronouns. I have a comment about using "myself" in two specific situations: in the Federal Government world of unending meetings, we sometimes explain to others present: "Mr. Bland, Ms. Samuelson, Mr. Falk, and myself visited Agency X for a series of meetings." (Yes, people actually refer to other government members, especially senior officials, in this way.) I have read that in formal situations and writing (e.g., Meeting Minutes), it is acceptable to use "myself" in such a sentence. The reason cited for this acceptable usage had to do with the "formality" of certain situations and writing as I havejust desribed. Perhaps another justification would be the "emphatic" use of "myself," as you have explained. However, "myself" in your "emphatic" examples seems only to be used as an apositive that could be removed with no loss of meaning. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Well. at least I'm not alone on this me/myself issue. It always irks me when watching a documentary involving cops to hear one of then say "Myself and ________." #1. NEVER put your own designation first, poor grammar and sounds rude to boot. Another booboo is "She gave it to myself". Do these lawpersons learn this in cop school? I actually was under the impression that modern law enforcers were college educated. If so, dear friends, find out where your local fuzzies went to college and make damn certain you don't send your kids there!

What if you are thanking someone for a donation that they made in honor of you and your family? "Thank you for your donation in honor of my family and me"? Or should it be "in my honor and in honor of my family"? A bit wordy, no?
