Researchers discover that kids are using "yo" as a slang pronoun.

(Sorry for the very late reply) Yo as a pronoun is very common here in Toronto, so much so that it's not just 'the kids' my late 20-something and 30-something friends use it on occasion in VERY casual speak. "Yo crazy" "Yo all is crazy" "Yo show is tonight, Yo going?" in that last case the first Yo is a band or an art opening and the second is directed to a group of people who the person is inviting... confusing - yes. It is also used in all the other ways described as in getting attention, short form for you or your...

Hey there, this is Stephen from SLC Utah. I use yo. My mom says I can't use yo momma jokes (she's one of those homeschooler mommas, who I often refer to as "yo mom" ha!)
Anyways, a lot of my friends and I use yo daily in our peer group related conversations. Examples;
"Yo, what up?"
"Yo bro"
Most of the time it's an attention getter.

Just a quick tidbit of information, the sentence ender "?" (pronounced "yo") in Japanese is a postposition that signals exclamation. Although it has no usage as a pronoun and I doubt the Japanese language would affect kids in Boston, you never know where someone may get the idea from.

Hello,
I am an 11 year old in Michigan (where exactly I will not reveal), however, I have found that LOTS of students (including myself) like using it. I think it is a good alternative, but I do not think we should go as far as putting it in the dictionary. ;-)

I often use 'yo' as a second person pronoun when talking to someone. I'll say "What's up, yo?" Or, "Listen, yo, I really don't think..." I am 30 years old, and have lived most of my life in Indiana, so I'm not sure where I picked it up, but there it is. Wow, there's a lot of pressure to use correct grammar when posting a comment here!

This is so interesting! I don't know if this ha any connection, but the word "yo" in Spanish is a first-person subject and object pronoun; in other words, it means I or Me. Of course, from the podcast, I can see that these students are using it as a third-person pronoun, but it seems that they may have borrowed this word. Does anyone know if "yo" is used in any similar way in other languages? I'll do some research and post another comment if I find anything else.
