How can someone who calls herself "Grammar Girl" write the following: "it's nearly impossible for someone to accurately proofread their own writing and be consistently successful."? "Someone" would proofread "his" work or "her" work, but not "their" work.

These are good suggestions. Downloading the paper and reading it aloud helps me too. Does anyone have an editor I can hire?

The hardest thing for me to do is proof read. I really do not want to read the paper after I have written it. I may read it a few days later. However, proofreading is the most vital step in completing a paper. I have to read it two or three times to catch my mistakes.

on the subject of proofreading - I am writing a book in which one of my characters is a freelance proofreader. Can anyone tell me how copy is received these days - would it always be electronically or would there be occasions when paper copies would be sent through the post?

My proofreading tip: Use MS Word's zoom feature to magnify the type on screen. It is easier to catch errors when the type is not the normal size.

If it is possible, do your best to get someone who has the ability and skill, to proofread the copy for you.

There are courses you can take to acquire proofreading skills.

In the past, that is why you didn't see errors in most written material. It was reviewed by a professional before sent into the public domain. In some cases, the New York Times blogs for example, there still is an editor who proofreads the text.
