I had an argument with a friend about this and neither of us could cite any good material to defend our positions (he had the experience of grammar naziism on his side)

This really helps. Thanks!

In Carson's (or is it Zwicky's) example of a "stranded" preposition, the wrong pronoun is used. Misplaced though it may be, the object of the preposition should be whom, not who.

What is the enormous deal? Why is "than" any different than any other word in that how it is labelled is determined by the position,(and context) it holds in a sentence? Of course, "than" is both a conjunction and a preposition. In the "bunny" example, it is clearly a conjunction. Evidently, the "than" article argues for mutual exclusivity. It need not be.

Seems to me that slipping a grammatical debate into a job interview would be a master stroke, particularly for a position like editor, proofreader, etc. One of the goals in a job interview is to control the course of the interview and limit probing into potentially weak areas. Coming to the interview fully armed with arguments for both positions could make a good impression.

Good column, yet I think you left out a closing quote in the first sentence after "than" and the comma, and also placed the question mark outside the quote in the following sentence. I turned off my editorial eyes after that! Keep up the good work.
