I completely agree with using "a historic" instead of "an historic". According to THE AAMT BOOK OF STYLE for medical transcription by Claudia Tessier... Use a before a consonant, a sounded (aspirate) h, or a long u sound. Use an before a vowel or an unsounded h.

I was suprised to read about using "a" instead of "an" as the article before the word historic. I was looking through back posting for just this topic because it is a pet peeve. However, it seams that every teacher I had from first grade through college had it wrong?

I took a Master's Degree in History (here in 'Merica!) and was taught to use "an historian" in professional writing. We were also made aware of changes in US English texts that came about because publishing houses are cheap (i.e., they want to save money by saving ink and space); a few examples were:
"US history" vs. "U.S. history"
"president Nixon" vs. "President Nixon"
