I thank you for this clarification. I have had this discussion before. As a non English native speaker, I cringe every time I hear people say "me and my friend". It is so commonly used that people tell me that it is grammaticaly correct. I have seen a store called "Me and mi sister"...augggg. I love your site and your articles!

This is really interesting. It is different when you analyze the sentence and what you want to mean. One is a subject and another is an object.

Wondering how you handle this when using proper nouns. Is it 'Bob and you' or 'you and Bob?' The latter sounds more natural, but I wonder if it's correct.

I understand and agree with placing others before "me" and "I". But I thought there was a definite rule regarding when to use "me" and when to use "I"? Could you expand on this?

Love the podcast: educational, great voice, and super clear. I put The Elements of Style on my wish list. I was surprised I could even get it on VHS. A+ work and thanks.

katieC, Yes, it sounds awkward but it is grammatically correct. If exactly to whom she gave advice is obvious, feel free to use "us". "She gave him and me, but not her, some advice".

I understand the concepts here, but find myself wondering: why not "we" or "us"? Some of the statements, such as, "She gave him and me some advice," just seem a bit awkward. Is there ever a case - other than style - for opting for compound pronouns rather than plural personal pronouns?

Thanks for a wonderful resource!
