Is it ok to say 011 for 2011?

what about just Twenty Eleven?

As an English teacher in Denmark, I'm very confused about both how to say and write 2011 gramatically correct - what should I teach the students?

My issue with the pronunciation always went back to how the number is said mathematically. For example, the correct way to say the number 2006 is "two thousand six." The word "and" indicates the decimal point (like when writing a check). "Two thousand and six" means 2000.06 (it is assumed that it is six out of a hundred unless otherwise specified).

As for twenty ten or two thousand ten...either way sounds fine to me :-)

I definitely prefer two thousand eleven without the and.
I was born in 1931 not 19 and 31.

I seem to recall that literature I've read about cowboys and the American old west used "aught" instead of "oh" or "zero" in dates such as "nineteen aught three." I've never heard anyone in the USA use "aught" for zero in modern times, though.

I agree about the "oh" sounding confusing, which is probably why I (USA person) switched from two thousand nine (in 2009) to 20-10 (in 2010).

Microsoft's newest SharePoint product is pronounced SharePoint Twenty-Ten, for what it's worth.

I didn't think of pronouncing the year that way til I heard that, even though it's consistent with what we said in the past. No one ever said One Thousand Nine Hundred and Ninety Nine.

I think its much easier to pronounce the year as "twenty eleven" than as "two thousand eleven," even though I say it both ways. Since 2010 I wondered what the proper way was when pronouncing the year. Either way it goes, any way the year is the pronounced people still know what year you are talking about so I don't think it really matters which way its said!

Alan, "O" is used for "0" in the United States as well.

I decided at the end of 2009 that starting last year, I would start pronouncing the years “twenty ten”, “twenty eleven”, and so forth. To me it just sounds better now.

Here in the UK, during the last century people would say "nineteen forty seven" or whatever. 1901 would be "nineteen oh [standing for zero] one". However, after 2000, almost everybody would say "two thousand and one". Presumably "twenty oh one" didn't sound right for some reason. However, now we're into the second decade, I've noticed a lot more people saying "twenty ten" and "twenty eleven" rather than "two thousand and ...".

The use of "oh" to mean zero (as well as the letter o) in speech is confusing. I don't think it is used like that in the USA?
