Quotation marks are a whole subject of their own.
It isn't called anything in particular when you use quotation marks to call attention to a phrase or denote colloquial or nonstandard usage.*

* "usage" refers to conventions and standards. It is correctly usaged here ;)

As for ellipses and use of punctuation with quotation marks, the rules are different depending on which style guide you consult. Most style guides have you put the punctuation inside the quote, (e.g. He said, "Phooey!") others say you put the appropriate punctuation for the quote inside and then the appropriate punctuation for your sentence outside the quote. (e.g. Did he say, "Phooey!"?)
Usually, you pick one style and stick with it, unless your employer requires you to use one particular style guide.

The other important use of quotation marks is called the "scare quote." They are used to alert the reader that the writer either does not believe, is scornful of, or otherwise wants to distance himself from whatever is in the quotes. That wasn't what you used, strictly speaking, but it deserves mention.

Finally, ellipsis is singular (all three dots are one ellipsis) and ellipses is plural (more than one set of three dots.)

I still don't understand the difference. When you told your sister the party was earlier than it was, you had a purpose in mind. You were full of purpose as I see it. Similarly, when your eyebrows raised to your brother, it wasn't an accident as when someone might raise their eyebrows before taking a drink, you did it purposely. This isn't anything against your examples, I'm just not so sure there's a real difference between these words! What am I missing?

Helpful as always. I'm one who goes to great pains to get it right...even in my emails. So tell me, Mignon, what about the three periods or ellipses I just used? OK? What is the difference, if any, between an ellipses and a period other than there are three dots in an ellipses? And too, is the word ellipses both singular and plural; and is my use of the word both in this sentence correct?

I come to your site many times each week; you are such a Godsend. Here is a copy and paste job from another of your pages: "Again it’s a subtle change in meaning, but to say it works better than “Funny People” is different from just saying it works."

My question here is your use of different from opposed to writing different than. I'm afraid I would have written different than...and I suppose now that I would have been wrong. Going on, should I put a space between my dot dot dots?

I'm an old retired guy and do a lot of reading. I find tons of mistakes in published works. Often I visit Grammar Girl to 'check it out,' and I'm learning a lot from this. See the marks I placed around check it out, what are those called and how are they different from "quotation" marks? In my example above should the comma fall inside or outside the (') mark? Oh, I have so many questions.

I have often thought I should get some more training in writing and offer my service as a proof reader. What books should I study? I know, yours of course, would be on the list. How many do you have and should I study all of them? What other books can you suggest?

Back in the nineties I took a battery of tests and on the word usage portion I scored in the upper 2% of all college graduates who had taken the test. Also, I took some tests at Austin Community College and I was told that I was the first person they knew of who scored 100% on the vocabulary portion. So I feel I have some bit of talent in this direction.

Please help me get started in the right direction. I'm too old to return to a university.
